Award-winning
center
welcomes college students
Working
hand-in-hand with our client, administrators and students, Hanson
developed an award-winning student center for the central campus
of the Broward Community College (www.broward.edu/index.jsp)
in Davie, Fla.
The student center is home to many major services, particularly
those helpful to potential or new students. Students will find offices
for advising and testing, as well as registration and other enrollment
services. The building also serves students on a regular basis as
a place where they can learn more about student organizations, activities
or events, or just hang out playing table tennis or shooting pool.
We
provided full-service architectural and engineering design to renovate
the bookstore building and create the student services building,
complete with a cafeteria. The project was approximately 65,000
square feet, with 20,000 square feet of renovation. The balance
of 45,000 square feet was new construction.
Primary design
goals
The
primary design goals, according to Hanson Project Manager Steve
Knight, were to:
- create
a campus "cornerstone" to welcome new and current students and
campus visitors;
- develop
a state-of-the-art facility for student admission and registration;
- create
an open mall area centrally located for student gathering and
interaction;
- develop
a design that is consistent with the surrounding campus.
Knight
says the client used the construction management project delivery/construction
method. "The construction manager was also an integral part of the
design team during the design development phase of the project,"
he adds.
The project won a 2002 AIA Award of Excellence from the Orlando
Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for both Hanson
(architect of record) and Hunton Brady Pryor Maso Architects (design
architect).
