Japanese engineering and architecture students to tour Hanson
and presidential library/museum
SPRINGFIELD,
Ill. – Engineering and architecture students from the Ashikaga
Institute of Technology, Ashikaga City, Japan, will visit Hanson
Professional Services Inc.’s Springfield, Ill., headquarters
at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2003. A tour of the Abraham Lincoln
Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield will follow at
3:30 p.m.
Instructors
from the Institute and the University of Illinois at Springfield
will also accompany the students. The Ashikaga Institute of Technology
offers bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees in engineering
and architecture. The students’ visit is part of a U.S.–Japan
community partnership project that joins Ashikaga and Springfield
as sister cities.
The
students and instructors will tour Hanson’s Springfield
180-person office, including the firm’s transportation,
building and facilities, and technical services departments.
The tour also will include highlights of Hanson’s work
on projects worldwide, including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential
Library and Museum.
Structural
engineers Tom Bartolomucci, P.E., S.E., and Mike Flatt, P.E.,
S.E., will give a brief presentation on Hanson’s involvement
with the design and construction of the presidential library
and museum, specifically the specialized structural engineering
services required for this project. Hanson is providing site
geotechnical, civil and structural engineering and construction
observation. In addition, the firm has provided land acquisition
and relocation services, as well as demolition engineering.
Students
will then tour the presidential library and museum and view a
DVD presentation that highlights the development of the museum
exhibits.
The
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library will house the Illinois
State Historical Library, which holds the
world’s largest collection of pre-presidential Lincoln material. The
museum portion of the complex will allow visitors to discover more about Lincoln’s
life, and will feature three theatres, 3-D history exhibits and a gift shop.
