Japanese engineering and architecture students to tour Hanson and presidential library/museum

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Engineering and architecture students from the Ashikaga Institute of Technology, Ashikaga City, Japan, will visit Hanson Professional Services Inc.’s Springfield, Ill., headquarters at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2003. A tour of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield will follow at 3:30 p.m.

Instructors from the Institute and the University of Illinois at Springfield will also accompany the students. The Ashikaga Institute of Technology offers bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees in engineering and architecture. The students’ visit is part of a U.S.–Japan community partnership project that joins Ashikaga and Springfield as sister cities.

The students and instructors will tour Hanson’s Springfield 180-person office, including the firm’s transportation, building and facilities, and technical services departments. The tour also will include highlights of Hanson’s work on projects worldwide, including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Structural engineers Tom Bartolomucci, P.E., S.E., and Mike Flatt, P.E., S.E., will give a brief presentation on Hanson’s involvement with the design and construction of the presidential library and museum, specifically the specialized structural engineering services required for this project. Hanson is providing site geotechnical, civil and structural engineering and construction observation. In addition, the firm has provided land acquisition and relocation services, as well as demolition engineering.

Students will then tour the presidential library and museum and view a DVD presentation that highlights the development of the museum exhibits.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library will house the Illinois State Historical Library, which holds the
world’s largest collection of pre-presidential Lincoln material. The museum portion of the complex will allow visitors to discover more about Lincoln’s life, and will feature three theatres, 3-D history exhibits and a gift shop.
