Hanson receives high performance ratings
for Fermilab design
SPRINGFIELD,
Ill. – The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory
(FNAL) in Batavia, Ill., recently gave Hanson Professional Services
Inc. a high performance rating for the firm’s work on
the future Fermilab Main Injector (MI-31) facility. During this
project, Hanson developed construction drawings and specification
documents, construction schedule milestones, and a construction
cost estimate.
“The
future MI-31 facility will house equipment that will allow Fermilab
to increase availability of antiprotons for collision experiments.
Successful completion of this project is critically important to
maintain Fermilab’s hold on the frontier of high-energy physics.
Hanson’s efforts in preparing the design and construction
documents for the MI-31 facility have helped us move forward with
this project,” says Jeffrey A. Sims, P.E., S.E., construction
manager and project engineer for Fermilab. He adds that the averages
of the construction proposals submitted for the facility were within
1 percent of the construction estimate provided by Hanson. Construction
of the new MI-31 facility began in late spring.
The
MI-31 facility features a new high-bay structure and includes a
30-foot-deep basement. Equipment in this state-of-the-art facility
will aid in the cooling and focusing of antiprotons traveling near
the speed of light within the Main Injector Accelerator.
Founded
in 1967, Fermilab was commissioned by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission,
under a bill signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1974,
the laboratory was renamed in honor of the 1938 Nobel Prize winner
Enrico Fermi, one of the preeminent physicists of the atomic
age. According to its mission, “Fermi National Accelerator
Laboratory advances the understanding of the fundamental nature
of matter and energy by providing leadership and resources for
qualified researchers to conduct basic research at the frontiers
of high-energy physics and related disciplines.”
Hanson
