Coombe marks 30 years at Hanson

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — John P. Coombe, P.E., S.E., recently celebrated 30 years of service at Hanson Professional Services Inc. Coombe, an executive vice president, serves as director of Hanson’s transportation services. He oversees four of the seven market units at Hanson, including aviation; departments of transportation and tollways; local government; and railway. In 2007, these markets accounted for more than 60 percent of Hanson’s $63 million revenue.

Coombe started as a design engineer in Hanson’s Peoria, Ill., regional office. In 1985, he transferred to Hanson’s corporate office in Springfield, Ill., becoming the chief operating officer in 1998. His career highlights include providing construction engineering on the U.S. 51/Interstate 39 construction project in Lee County, Ill., as well as completing an investigation and renovation of Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois in 1983. Additionally, he co-authored a paper, "University of Illinois, Memorial Stadium: Investigation and Rehabilitation," published in 1991 by the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities. The paper was selected as one of the best journal papers of the year by ASCE’s Technical Council on Engineering.

He currently serves as the principal-in-charge for two high-profile projects, the Paducah & Louisville (P&L) railroad bridge and the South Suburban Airport. The P&L bridge project is a 3,100-foot-long railroad bridge near Grand Rivers, Ky., for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Nashville District. He remains active in Hanson’s land acquisition and land management services for the South Suburban Airport, serving the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Aeronautics.

He was recently recognized with the 2008 Community Leader Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Illinois for his extensive involvement in community activities and advancing the engineering profession.

Coombe holds a bachelor’s degree (1975) in civil engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree (1978) in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
