Coombe receives Community Leader Award

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — John P. Coombe, P.E., S.E., executive vice president at Hanson Professional Services Inc., recently was recognized with the 2008 Community Leader Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois (ACEC-IL). The Community Leader Award is the highest community service recognition given at ACEC-IL’s annual meeting and awards program.

“I am humbled to be recognized with the Community Leader Award from ACEC-IL. I’m grateful that my family and colleagues have supported me in my community involvement efforts, and I appreciate their commitment to and support of our community,” says Coombe.

Some of Coombe’s many community appointments include serving on the board of directors for the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, ACEC-IL, American Red Cross, the Springfield Area Chapter Alzheimer’s Association, Capital Area Sports Commission, Panther Creek Country Club, Notre Dame Club of Central Illinois, Heritage Foundation, and the Design Professionals Risk Control Group.

Most recently, he served as co-chairperson of the 2007 United Way of Central Illinois campaign, raising $3.2 million for local non-profit programs. John also has served as chairman of the American Lung Association’s Springfield Golf Classic, a premier summer golf outing in the Springfield area, raising more than $100,000 for pulmonary research.

Additionally, Coombe has assisted with new legislation and was a contributing author on an ACEC proposal for the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act II. He also has been active in the city of Springfield’s Infrastructure Task Force and other infrastructure committees for nearly two decades.

He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame (1975) and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois (1978), both in civil engineering. In 1987, he was named Young Engineer of the Year by the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers.
