Cusick recognized with Distinguished Alumnus Award by the University of Illinois Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Robert W. Cusick, P.E., S.E., executive vice president at Hanson Professional Services Inc., was recognized with a 2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association (CEEAA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Cusick was one of five alumni to receive the annual award presented to esteemed civil and environmental engineering graduates.

Awards are presented to exceptional alumni who demonstrate outstanding leadership in planning and directing engineering work; administer major engineering projects; contribute knowledge to their field; foster development of young engineers; contribute to society at large; and show commitment to their profession by contributing to civil engineering activities and organizations.

Cusick was specifically cited for his leadership in practice, major contributions to the management of engineering projects, strong contributions to the profession, and extensive public service.

“I greatly appreciate being recognized by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association. It's gratifying to be included in such a notable group of engineers, and I'm honored to be selected,” says Cusick.

Cusick holds bachelor’s (1974) and master’s degrees (1976) in civil engineering, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After graduating, he joined Hanson as a civil engineer.

By the time Cusick was 30 years old, he was instrumental in several complex projects, including underpinning work for subways in Atlanta, Ga., Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, Pa.; the design of post-tensioned and delta-frame bridges in Saudi Arabia; the design of coal silos in China; and remedial foundation work for the $4 billion Consumers Nuclear Power Plant in Michigan.

Cusick has participated in several projects at the University of Illinois, including the management of all structural engineering aspects of Memorial Stadium renovations in the 1980s and 1990s.

Since 1993, Cusick has served as a program manager for the technical review of the Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp.’s radioactive waste decommissioning project, the largest radioactive decommissioning project in the state of Illinois.

Most recently, he coordinated Hanson’s disaster relief and recovery services for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, totaling more than $10 million since 2004.
