Hanson brings healthy living to the workplace

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Hanson Professional Services Inc. has taken a proactive approach to employee wellness.

In 2007, Hanson rolled out a new and improved employee wellness program. This now includes an annual Hanson Wellness Fair; an annual credit for employees to create their own personalized wellness program; and weekly fresh fruit and/or vegetable trays in their 20 nationwide offices.

Last year, 181 employees, approximately 40 percent of the company, took advantage of the personal employee wellness program, using the program for fitness club memberships, exercise equipment, bicycles, weight management programs and massages. Through employee reimbursement, more than $49,000 was given out to support these efforts.

The 2008 Hanson Wellness Fair included a variety of proactive wellness options such as how to prepare healthy recipes, health club membership information, health insurance benefits, therapeutic massage, body mass index testing, and cholesterol and blood pressure screenings.

Additionally, Hanson promotes wellness and safety through first aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training for employees. In 2006, Hanson chose to purchase AED machines for every office and train employees on a voluntary basis, providing peace of mind to approximately 450 employees nationwide.

Wellness programs have been shown to reduce absenteeism, injuries and overall medical services. A 2007 survey by the Prudential Insurance Co. of America found that 32 percent of businesses believe it was “highly important” to offer wellness and healthy lifestyle programs as a way to control health care costs. In addition, wellness programs help employers recruit and retain employees, increase staff morale, and emphasize wellness in multiple aspects of an employee’s life.

“While Hanson has consistently offered excellent benefits to our employees, we also wanted to emphasize the importance of a well-rounded wellness program. By balancing proactive and preparedness initiatives, we hope to encourage employees to be their personal best in every aspect of their lives,” states Sergio “Satch” Pecori, Hanson’s president and CEO.
