PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Hanson is providing planning, permitting, design, and construction services to the BNSF Railway Company for the expansion of their existing Memphis Intermodal (Tennessee Yard) facility. The expansion will increase the capacity of the Tennessee Yard from 250,000 annual lifts to over 1 million annual lifts. As part of developing the site, Hanson completed the process and obtained city approval for three street closures. Hanson is also assisting with various property acquisition issues and the closure of a state road.
The expansion is being constructed on a 200 acre site adjacent to the existing Tennessee Yard. The intermodal expansion includes six proposed intermodal tracks, two future intermodal tracks, infrastructure for 20 rail-mounted wide span cranes for train loading and ground stacking operations, enclosing John’s Creek in a culvert consisting of three 30 ft span arches, extending an existing mainline track bridge from three spans to five spans, automated gate system, administrative building, maintenance building, contractor welfare building, load transfer dock, fueling facilities for the yard equipment, high-mast lighting, underground power service distribution system, industrial wastewater treatment system, grading, drainage, AC and PCC paving, and utility relocations.
In addition to the intermodal expansion, an additional lead track is being added to accommodate the facility expansion. The lead track work includes modifying three highway bridges to accommodate the new track, a new through plate girder railroad bridge, grading, and drainage.
